HOLE 1
Many architects want their opening hole to be a gentle introduction to the course; that is not the case here. Royal Palm has virtually eliminated all asphalt cart paths and replaced them with coquina sand trails, which demand an acquired talent to hit the ball cleanly before contact with the stone dust. The first is a majestic opener that plays 408 yards from the championship tees. A classic dogleg left with church pew bunkers guarding the fairway's left side and a large sloped bunker guarding the right. Finding the fairway is a must as the second shot is to a wide but shallow 2-tiered green, making distance control a priority.

HOLE 2
The second is a straightaway par 4 playing 398 yards from the back. Water, bunkers, and trees line both sides, making errant tee shots, especially penalizing for this seemingly innocent hole. Another wide but shallow green slopes severely from back to front. One deep bunker short left and another long bunker to the right protects this green. One of the approaches that require the player to carry a bunker, especially when the pin is on the left side of the green.

HOLE 3
The third is the longest par 4 on the golf course, tipping out at 422 yards, plays even longer as golfers are usually facing a headwind. This slight dogleg left hole is protected on both sides by water and trees to the right and an environmental area and water to the left. The green has a massive bunker on the left and one on the right side to catch inaccurate approach shots. Since approach shots are usually from a good distance out, challenging putts from a long distance is all too common.

The fourth is the longest par 5 on the course, measuring 556 yards from the championship tees. Trees and a canal running the length of this slight dogleg left hole. Playing into a headwind like the third means only the longest bombers will reach home in two. A fairway bunker on the left that catches a pulled tee shot and a cluster of trees and two bunkers protect the sides of this sloping hourglass green.

HOLE 5
At only 166 yards, the short par 3 fifth requires an accurate carry shot over a pond to an elongated green that slopes severely from back to front. A deep bunker protects shots that clear the water but do not make the green. Going long will leave a delicate downhill pitch. A breaking putt of sixty to seventy feet is undoubtedly possible here.

HOLE 6
At 388-yards the par 4 sixth plays as one of the toughest holes at Royal Palm. A dogleg right with water and trees down the sides and a large fairway bunker on the left side that catches pulled tee shots. A missed tee shot short and right leaves virtually no chance at making the green in regulation. Another vast green can leave some long, breaking putts based on pin placement. Grass swales and a bunker surrounding the green will test your short game.

HOLE 7
The seventh is the shortest of the par 5's topping out at 499 yards does not mean it is the easiest of them as the narrow landing area off the tee is protected by water to the left and trees lining the right side. Additionally, fairway bunkers on both sides of the fairway make for an even narrower landing area off the tee that easily catches errant tee balls. Another fairway bunker is in the way on approach shots leaving recovery shots exceeding 100 yards. A bunker on the left protects this large 2-tiered green. Depending on hole locations, this green can be a great challenge.

HOLE 8
The eighth hole is a 160-yard par 3 to an elevated L-shaped green. Water lines the left side and waste area to the right. Bunkers protect pulled shots on the left and the back of the green to catch players that overshoot the green. The slope of this green can lead to some nerve-racking pitches and putts depending on pin locations.

HOLE 9
The final hole of the front nine is a short par 4 measuring only 356 yards from the tips. This sharp dogleg right requires some carry off the tee as water lines the front and left side of the hole. The tee shot is all about distance control. Short, offline shots can find one of the three pot-bunkers on the right side, and church pew bunkers catch balls that carry too far. Finding the short grass off the tee will help approach carry the bunker and hold this gently-sloping green.

HOLE 10
Starting on either 9 is common here, so it is no surprise to find the tenth only slightly more gentile than the first but just as mentally tough. Even though this par 5 measures only 500 yards from the back, the tee shot always plays narrower due to water lining the left side and out of bounds driving range down the right. The large, elevated, 2-tiered green is protected on the right by a large bunker, and deep grass swales to the left. Like many holes at Royal Palm, going long here makes for a tough recovery shot.

HOLE 11
The eleventh hole is a slight dogleg left par 4 measuring 364 yards. A pond protects this hole's right side and a large fairway bunker right at the dogleg's bend on the left. Aside from that and a few trees, this hole is generous off the tee. Approach shots to a kidney-shaped green that is much higher in the back than the rest with large grass swales and a bunker protecting the sides can lead to some interesting results.

HOLE 12
The twelfth hole consistently rates as one of the toughest holes on the course. This 407-yard par 4 demands a long tee shot over a pond's edge to an elevated fairway. A large bunker protects the fairway's right side while numerous trees and coquina sand environmental areas line the sides. This hole bottlenecks short of the green, making lay-up shots especially difficult; finding the short grass off the tee is a priority. A sloping 3-tiered green makes for some spectacular pin locations.

HOLE 13
The thirteenth is the most ordinary-looking hole at Royal Palm, which comes at an ideal time in the round. Only two large bunkers on each side protect this straightaway shot. Distance is the only demanding aspect of this par 3, topping out at 202 yards. For some reason, the thirteenth plays harder than it should following the usual frustration of the twelfth.

HOLE 14
The straightaway par 4 fourteenth measures 354 yards from the back. A large oak protects the fairway's right side, so the ideal tee shot is left of the middle. If tee shots are far enough back in the fairway, players could go over the tree; otherwise a miss to the right forces players to get creative to reach the green in regulation. The fourteenth green has two distinct tiers with a large ridge across the middle intersecting it from left to right. Approach shots that end up on the wrong tier lead to some tough two putts.

HOLE 15
The fifteenth tips out at 333 yards, making it the shortest par 4 on the course. However, this sharp 90-degree dogleg right has plenty of defense: a creek runs across the hole just short of the green, water to the left, trees to the right, and three bunkers guard both sides of the fairway and the green. The approach shot must carry the creek into another wide but shallow sloping green. Certain pin placements here can lead to some challenging short game shots.

HOLE 16
At 206 yards, the long par 3 sixteenth easily produces the fewest greens in regulation. Depending on the tee box, a tough carry shot requiring either 1 or 2 pond-carry off the tee into a long, elevated green. A common headwind makes this hole play even longer, which is also protected by a large bunker on the right and grass swales on the left side. Exceptionally long putts are not uncommon.

HOLE 17
The seventeenth and eighteenth holes showcase the most aggressive changes from the 2019 renovation compared to the original course design. The par 4 seventeenth measures only 340 yards from the back but has several new features making it a signature hole. Two huge bunkers define the right edge of an elevated fairway that gradually narrows the closer you get to the green. The approach shot to this peninsula green featuring a beautiful rock wall requires precise distance control.

HOLE 18
The eighteenth hole measures in at 523 yards from the championship tees. This closing hole requires a straight drive over a pond, usually into a slight headwind with low-hanging oaks protecting the right side and a canal down the left of this double dogleg par 5. Two fairway bunkers and one greenside bunker are protecting various shots along the way. The eighteenth features one of the smallest greens on the course, which means course management is especially important if you want to end the round on a good note with a birdie or par.
